Originally born in Havana, Cuba, Yamil Piedra was only two years old when he arrived in Miami by way of the famous Mariel Boatlift in 1980.
Yamil's love for entertaining began in grade school when he performed in a teacher/student talent show with his 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Austin. The response he received from the audience when he stepped on stage was so gratifying that that's when he knew he had to entertain people for a living. It was that same year in 1989, at 11 years old, when he first saw Saturday Night Live and immediately knew that's what he wanted. Yamil eventually got a hold of his uncle's VHS camera and began filming little movies and commercial parodies.
Yamil eventually started high school attending LaSalle High School in Coconut Grove, FL and joined the school's drama club. Once he graduated from high school, he attended Florida International University and majored in Theatre. While in college he cofounded the Miami-based comedy troupe Impromedy in 1997 and the sketch comedy duo A Pair of Nuts in 2003. The first shows of it’s kind in South Florida to combine live sketch with videos.
After having performed in a great number of plays throughout high school and college, Yamil decided it was time to take a step forward into the world of television and film. He began to work on independent and student films, on television with Univision's Sabado Gigante and Los Metiches, and in a number of commercials. Eventually, Yamil began to work on bigger projects including feature films like From Justin to Kelly and The Punisher, and on the WB's Jamie Kennedy Experiment.
Having performed improv/sketch comedy since 1997 it was only a matter of time before Yamil ventured into stand up. Yamil stepped on a stand up comedy stage for the first time in 2002 when he performed during open mic night at the Miami Improv. That same night scouts from BET's Comic View were in the audience and asked Yamil to perform for their season of "Caliente" at the Jackie Gleason Theatre. It was a “being at the right place, at the right time” situation. Yamil performed his set and won over the audience with his dry, deadpan style of comedy. However, he didn’t continue to pursue stand up much further because he was intent on finishing college and continuing his acting career. Although he hated school, he aimed to please his parents and finally graduated from Florida International University in 2003 with a BA in Theatre.
In May of 2004, Yamil took his biggest step of all and moved to Los Angeles. Within a few short months he booked co-starring roles on NBC's Las Vegas working alongside James Caan and Josh Duhamel and ABC's Boston Legal opposite James Spader. In early 2006 Yamil decided to try his hand at stand up once again and auditioned for Last Comic Standing 4. He made it to the evening callbacks and was featured in the premiere episode.
In December 2006, Yamil moved back to Miami in the hopes of working on a few projects that were brought to him, but unfortunately never actually materialized. But as they say, everything happens for a reason. He approached his comedy buddy Johnny Trabanco about once again reforming their sketch comedy duo “A Pair of Nuts.” In January 2007 they performed their first show in 3 years at the 2007 Miami Improv Festival and ended up winning the “Best South Florida Performance” award. Fast forward a few years later and “A Pair of Nuts” are now headlining at comedy clubs nationwide, wowing college audiences, and created & starred in their own web series “The Nuthouse” in collaboration with Peripheral Films. The Nuts have been featured on Last Call w/ Carson Daily, BET, Discovery Channel, MegaTV, and all over the internet. In 2009 they were invited to perform at the Comedy Central Stage in LA where they received a standing ovation. And in 2010 they were invited to headline the South Beach Comedy Festival Preview Night. Soon these Nuts will be all over your face!
In May 2007 Yamil was featured in Ocean Drive Espanol’s “En Caliente” (What’s Hot) section. Along with his television, film, and live appearances, Yamil’s work has been making it’s way around the internet garnering millions of views. He is currently writing and starring in the international spanish sketch comedy show on MegaTV “El Vacilon,” Sundays at 10PM. You can also check out Yamil with A Pair of Nuts on the VH1 reality show “Money Hungry,” Mondays at 9PM.
